Highlights of the Van Gogh museum.
The museum went through Van Gogh's entire artistic process. It described his training, what he struggled with, which canvases he used, who inspired him and who he inspired, and how his own style developed. It was so incredible. Here are just a few highlights of things we loved and why.
We got to touch a reproduction of part of a painting to actually feel how thick the paint is and what the brushstrokes are really like. It is good that this was here. It really was so tempting to reach out and touch his paintings.
Look at the dancing cloud in the top left corner. There is so much life and movement that breaths through his later paintings.
We loved the how we could feel the wind blowing in this picture. Everything felt like it was moving.
Picnic
It was another beautiful day so we ate lunch in the grass at Museumplein and finished off with the most delicious ice cream before heading to the Van Gogh Museum.
Battle of Waterloo
We were impressed (amused) by the attention to the individual faces in this monumental painting. Our favorites are here:
Grumpy guy at the bottom...he didn't get his turn to hold the flag.
It must be so serene to be wounded and carried off the battle field.

The Dutch way: French fries with garlic mayonnaise and barbecue sauce
This is how all the locals do it. We actually really enjoyed it.

This meant so much to me. It completed my experience that I had having the honor to play Anne Frank. We are so lucky to have Anne's spirit and what she taught us about humanity and the holocaust. Her voice can speak for the silence of so many. Thank you Anne.
Amsterdam bicycles
We are spending part of the evening looking at Brian's Amsterdam bicycle page. It is more comprehensive than we would ever notice and so interesting to look at. Others might find it cool as well.

French Grocery Store
I've been paying close attention to the different ads because I'm curious about cultural differences...Here's one:
We went into a grocery store and noticed a lot of the same brands
They also had Special K and Golden Graham's. We think the US should adopt pink toilet paper...
National Gallery
We got to see the Arnolfini Wedding (Portrait) and Allegory With Venus and Cupid (look this one up!), but we spend most of our time in the impressionist rooms. We loved Dega and Manet, and Monet, and I really enjoyed Camille Pissarro, whose work I hadn't looked at much before.
After that we saw an exhibit of Man Ray's portraits. This was really interesting and we enjoyed it, but we always feel kind of intimidated around photography.
